Here is the message we have heard from God and now tell to you: God is light, and in him there is no darkness at all.

-1 John 1:5

I have always loved the idea of Christmas in July. It’s a wonderful halfway(ish) mark to the best (in my opinion) season of the year. When thinking about July many people think of grilling out, hot weather, water games, freedom and fireworks. My favorite from this list is fireworks. The designs that can be created these days with light in the sky are amazing. When we see a firework shoot into the sky there is a moment of anticipation about what this one's color and pattern will be. Then, as the firework explodes and reveals its beauty, there are many sounds of excitement, joy and appreciation from the onlookers. The summer season of light!

I have been doing some research about the global Christmas in July celebrations. In the southern hemisphere they like to hold Christmas in July celebrations in order to have a little Christmas joy during their winter months. I think we can all agree that the cold and dark of the midwinter here in the north would not be as bearable without the season of light to keep us going. There are lots of reasons to celebrate the love and joy of Christmas in the summer, but the main reason is always to keep God’s promise at the front of our minds and hearts.

Light is a wonderful, meaningful, beautiful way to connect with God’s promise of hope, peace, joy and love throughout the year. Light is life. Light is the Holy Spirit. Light is Emanuel. As you celebrate this 4th of July I hope you are able to enjoy some fireworks (either in person or on a screen) and I hope you take a moment to reflect on light and God’s continued promise. Let’s all be reminded to celebrate the light of the lord and the light in each other all summer and all year long!
